Truly Limited: Review of WWE Over the Limit 2011

This year’s Over the Limit PPV event is proof that three weeks are not enough time to build a quality PPV.  Watching Raw this week was far more enjoyable than watching this show and it was on free television.  WWE Over the Limit had so many flaws that it put last year’s mess of a PPV to shame.  R-Truth and Rey Mysterio had no chemistry, which made for one sloppy and incredibly underwhelming opener.  Sin Cara vs. Chavo Guerrero had so much potential going into Over the Limit, but numerous botches and one-sided offense kept this match from reaching its true potential.  Everybody in the audience and watching at home were all expecting Kharma to be involved in the Diva Title match (during or after).  So when Kharma did not show up, it was one big letdown since she has been playing mind games with Kelly Kelly for weeks now.  These flaws were trumped by what took place in the main event.  Last Monday, the Miz teased that he found a way to make Cena say the dreaded two words, “I Quit”.  The Miz’s claim got many people including myself believing that he could possibly win.  Also the Miz’s little tease got many people actually intrigued in this match.  What we got was nothing close to what was teased.  What we got was the Miz and Alex Riley beating down Cena followed by asking him he wants to quit.  This little pattern repeated over and over again for 30 long, boring and tedious minutes until Cena went all Super Saiyan and made the Miz say “I Quit” in under a minute.  In one match, the WWE killed all of the Miz’s credibility as a main event star.  How on God’s Green Earth is the Miz ever going to be considered a threat to any main event star now?  It will be interesting to see how the WWE tries to fix this major setback in the coming months.

If you have not figured out by now, WWE Over the Limit was bad.  Even through all the crap, there were a few shining moments, actually three to be exact.  The first was the WWE’s acknowledgement of the unfortunate passing of “Macho Man” Randy Savage.  It was nice to see Vince McMahon put their differences with Savage behind him and go through with this simple gesture.  Despite its blemishes, Sin Cara vs. Chavo Guerrero was very enjoyable match; the second best match of the night.  The third and final moment was the excellent back-and-forth match that Randy Orton and Christian had.  They truly outshone everyone on this PPV with their stellar performance.  In the end, all the garbage on this PPV far outweighs those three shining moments.  Not even the greatness that was Randy Orton vs. Christian can entice anybody to pay for this entire PPV.

Overall, WWE Over the Limit was a horrible PPV.  The lack of proper build hurt this show from the very beginning.  Hopefully the WWE learns from this failure and cuts down on the number of PPVs a year; one PPV a month is more than enough.  Trying to build two PPVs in one month could easily have been done back when PPVs were exclusive to either Raw or Smackdown, but it is close to impossible to do it in the WWE’s current state.  Go out of your way to watch Randy Orton vs. Christian, but there is no reason to waste your precious time watching this PPV.  My overall rating for WWE Over the Limit is a 5 out of 10.
