The Silverdome Match of the Week: The Beast Known as Mark Henry

Last week was the calm, this week was the storm.  This week was quite busy with the whole WWE Draft.  30 superstars switched brands over the two day draft.  If you read the Top 10 WWE Draft Picks article from last week, I went 6 for 10; pretty good if I say so myself.  Looking forward to making the Top 10 WWE Draft Picks article an annual thing.  Also looking forward to seeing how the WWE Draft will affect both Raw and Smackdown in the coming weeks and months.  As the WWE Draft came to a close, the WWE has moved on to their next big event, this Sunday’s Extreme Rules.  With all the excitement, we got a lot of good matches.  CM Punk, The Miz & Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian, Mark Henry & John from WWE Raw, Christopher Daniels vs. Gunner for the TNA TV Title from TNA Impact and Christian & Randy Orton vs. Alberto Del Rio & Brodus Clay from WWE Smackdown were all worthy of the illustrious title that is the Silverdome Match of the Week, but there can only be one.  The one match worthy of the title of the Silverdome Match of the Week in Rey Mysterio vs. Mark Henry from WWE Smackdown.

For the last couple years, Mark Henry has become known to many of as a jolly super-heavyweight who has a fondness for the colour red.  That all changed last Monday Night when Henry turned on his tag team partners, John Cena & Christian, and cost Smackdown the final draft pick of the show.  Being drafted to Friday Night Smackdown, Mark Henry, along with his new found nerve, went to the Blue Brand with big things in mind.  The first challenge for the World’s Strongest Man would be one of Raw’s newest acquisitions in Rey Mysterio.  Right when the bell rang, Henry made a charge straight toward the WWE’s Biggest Little Man.  Mark Henry would get the best of the Rey Mysterio for the beginning of the match.  That was until Mysterio would start attacking the big man’s knees while they were on the floor.  Trying to get Mysterio away from him, Henry would shove his opponent into to the steel steps.  Henry would follow that desperation move by charging Mysterio yet again.  This time around Mysterio would move out of the way causing the World’s Strongest Man to collide into the steel steps knees first.  Rey Mysterio would take advantage of Henry’s mistake and go on the offence.  Mysterio’s offence would not last too long as Henry would go onto regain control of the match by tripping Mysterio while he was on the top rope.  Rey Mysterio would fall right into the Tree of Woe, giving Henry the opportunity to crush Mysterio in the corner with a splash.  In full control yet again, Henry would begin to toy with Rey Mysterio.  Henry’s overconfidence would lead to him missing a standing Banzai Drop, which lead right into a drop kick and a top rope West Coast Pop while Henry was sitting down.  Mysterio seemed to be gaining momentum when he reversed a splash from Henry into a 619.  As Mysterio ascended to the top rope, Cody Rhodes would run down to the ring and attack a vulnerable Rey Mysterio.  Rhodes actions cause Henry to be disqualified, but was not so bad.  Henry would get the last laugh by hitting his signature World’s Strongest Slam on Mysterio after he and Rhodes battled around ringside and in the crowd.  Even in disqualification, Mark Henry put on the best match he has had in a long time.  As a whole, this segment of Smackdown worked very well.  It furthered the feud between Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes leading to Extreme Rules and put over the fact that Mark Henry will a force to be wrecking with on Smackdown.

The WWE Draft is over, but the final wars between rivals being separated by the Draft will take place in less than 24 hours.  Much later today from the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, WWE will be holding the Extreme Rules PPV event.  Make sure not to miss it.  Then on Monday, from Miami, Florida we will lay witness to The Rock’s birthday celebration live on Raw.  The next two days will be very busy for us wrestling fans.  That is all for this early Sunday, May 1st.  Until next week dear readers, goodbye and have a fun time watching Extreme Rules.  Also remember to cheer for Christian (#ChristianForChamp).
