The Biggest Royal Rumble in WWE History: Preview of WWE Royal Rumble 2011

The most exciting season in the world of wrestling in my opinion is The Road to Wrestlemania.  As the WWE gets ready for their biggest show of the year, wrestling fans get to witness the great build-up.  Starting Sunday, everything that happens in the WWE leads to Wrestlemania.  Everything that happens in the ring will directly influence the spectacle, which will be Wrestlemania 27.

Now with the Royal Rumble being changed from the traditional 30 man match to the all new 40 man match, it is much harder to pinpoint one superstar that will end up winning this huge match.  There are about six superstars that all have a good chance of winning the Royal Rumble this year.  Expect more surprise entrants into the Royal Rumble than there have been in prior years due to the increase in the number of participants.  Come this Sunday January 30th, the 2011 Royal Rumble PPV will originate from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts and we start on a one way road that ends at Wrestlemania 27 in Atlanta.  Now let’s rundown each match on the card for the Royal Rumble.  Note:  (c) = Champion.

Natalya (c) vs. Lay-Cool in 2-on-1 Handicap Match for the WWE Divas Championship

Natalya vs. Melina for the Divas Title would have been a better match to put in this slot on the card.  Nonetheless, it is easy to see why WWE put this match together in the first place.  Expect Beth Phoenix to help Natalya even the odds against the condescending divas and further set up Natalya vs. Beth Phoenix for the Divas Title at Wrestlemania.

My Prediction:  Natalya retains

The Miz (c) vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship

Since the Miz won the WWE Title in November, he has not had a clean win over any main event level opponent.  This match against Randy Orton needs to be used to solidify the Miz’s reign as WWE Champion and as a main event level superstar in the WWE.  The Miz has the potential; WWE needs to give him the clean win over the insanely popular Randy Orton to get the ball rolling.

My Prediction:  The Miz retains

Edge(c) vs. Dolph Ziggler for the World Heavyweight Championship

Dolph Ziggler’s first chance at the World Title could possibly steal the show.  Dolph Ziggler is one phenomenal wrestler that can go out there and put on four to five star matches with the best of them.  2010 was a great year for Ziggler, 2011 looks to be his year to break the proverbially glass ceiling in the WWE, but not just yet.  Look for Edge and Ziggler go out to that ring and put on one great show with Edge pulling out the victory in the very end.  Even in defeat, a good match will put over Ziggler as a main event competitor.

My Prediction:  Edge retains

40-Man Royal Rumble

As mentioned earlier, it is hard to pick just one superstar that will win the Rumble this year.  John Cena, Sheamus, John Morrison, CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio and Wade Barrett could all possibly win the big match.  Unless there is a surprise entrant by the name of Christian, I believe that John Morrison will win the Royal Rumble and go on to challenge the Miz in the main event of Wrestlemania 27.

My Prediction:  John Morrison wins

WWE could possibly add one more match to card to be used to open the PPV, but they could skip on this addition entirely as the majority of the roster will be used in the Royal Rumble match.   Having four matches on the card is not a bad thing; it means that WWE can give more time for the matches that will most likely need it such as the WWE and World Title matches.  Also with 40 superstars in the Rumble this year, expect this match to last a good hour and a half (a half of the PPV).  So take the next day or so to relax because come Sunday, we all start of one hectic journey down a road with many twists and turns; a journey that only ends on April 3rd at Wrestlemania 27.
